Man, I tell ya- young folks and their indie music bands. So many you can hardly listen to any of it anymore- they’re the same anyways, right?

No. Along with the many others that have been showcased here as part of Mustache Music Monday, Local Natives has managed to stand out on account of two things: mustaches and solid music. The Local Natives themselves have managed to make their own mark by reliably combining the soft music typical of most indie bands with the ever reliable guitar parts of psychadelic music. And on top of that they’ve even been able to throw some folk-influenced singing in on top.

And did I mention the mustaches?

Now for those who don’t know, James Hetfield is the lead singer for Metallica.

Yea, yea- we know everyone out there doesn’t like metal, especially if they’ve only heard the heavier stuff. But, if there ever was one thing beautiful about the metal music scene, it was James Hetfield’s moustache.

While he now opts for a shamefully bare upper lip, you can still listen to Metallica’s music and envision a better, more stache-filled time.

If you have usually avoided listening to metal, try listening to Hero Of The Day , Turn The Page, Until It Sleeps, or Enter Sandman

Let me introduce you to the fine gentlemen who comprise the band Jayber Crow.

Zach and Pete bring us their beautiful music from the frozen lakes of Minnesota, and you can certainly hear the miles of midwest farmland ring through with every note.

Their “Indie Folk” style is a unique genre that’s hard to find nowadays with folk music not being widely heard since the 60s and 70s with the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Doc Watson. While this enthusiastic duo may not be the foremost presence on the scene, they are certainly one of the more impressive in terms of natural talent and mustache growing capabilities.

Please give these guys a listen.

I’m sure that they, and their mustaches, would appreciate it.

***Update: I was informed that while pete is on the left, the man on the right is their friend Shawn from The Wapsipinicon and Cloud Cult.

ANNNNNNDDDDD we’re back again!

Yes, you heard right- another Mustache Music Monday. And it’s over none other than The Doobie Brothers! While these lovely men made their music decades ago, it still sounds wonderful no matter how you listen to it: mp3, cd, vinyl or marching band. Even if you don’t recognize a song if you listened in.

So take a gander at those thick lip mittens flowing like “Black Water” down their face, into Fu Manchus that could practically be called a “China Grove.”

But to make up for it, I bring to you a delightful feature on the band Passion Pit, an indie rock band which has grown quickly in popularity over the past year.

Now lets be honest here- they aren’t fooling anyone with a name so obviously about mustaches. I mean how bold do you need to be to name your band for the passion one feels in the pit of his or her stomach upon spying three staches all in one band.

Note: For those who comment that many of the musicians whom I choose are bearded, not mustachioed- I offer up to you the fact that a mustache makes a man, a beard is merely an accessory to the stache.

So there I was- a student at this college, right? When I find out that there was a free concert by a band I had been listening to of late. So I figure I’ll swing by, grab a t-shirt and a CD- you know, make a casual visit.

But lo and behold- I was drawn in and paralyzed with awe. Why you ask? Well- the classy lip mittens of the band Sun Airway, of course.

And not only did they dazzle me with gorgeous music, they were nice enough to take a picture with my costumed self (Colonel Mustard) as well as sign my new Sun Airway record, Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier, with all sorts of clever friendly messages.

It’s no wonder they named a song “Waiting on You,”considering these gents are certainly waiting on the rest of the world to catch up with their fantastically full facial fur.

Well, any regular reader of Stachist will know I love to write little doodads about bands using their song titles. Turns out thats not as easy as you’d imagine when the band sings in Icelandic. Oh? Speak Icelandic you say? Well still not possible since this wonderful band actually created its own language for half of its songs.

YES! That’s right- Iceland’s Sigur Rós actually sings many of its vocals in Volenska (Eng: Hopelandic) a language of gibberish.

But then again, who really needs words when one has a mustache?

Even though the lyrics are indecipherable, they do lend themselves wonderfully to the music. Sigur Rós offers what I’d like call “mustache walking music”- reflecting that confident calming sensation of knowing that you have a mustache and that you kick ass.

A fantastic band with fantastic mustaches, you say?

Sounds like some pretty Hot Chip to me.

I mean who else could make such “Careful” music “Over and Over” but a band with mustaches so sexy it makes everyone within earshot “Ready For The Floor.” They are pretty much “Wrestlers” who wrangle your devotion with their nose neighbors which “Hold On” to your attention mercilessly, leaving you unable to look away. In the wise hands of these mustachioed magicians, those who “Don’t Dance” become “Bendable Poseable” on the dance floor, with moves so smooth everyone else can’t help but want to “Touch Too Much.” As you “Arrest Yourself” to the beat, and all jealous parties can only “Shake a Fist” in anger, you’ll be left with the “One Pure Thought” of “I Feel Better” knowing that that music was “Made in The Dark” with all the brilliant emotional “Colours” that can only come from having a mustache.

As a music-consuming public, “We’re Looking For A Lot of Love,” and that sort of heart-felt beauty can only come from a mustache.

Who are these gentlemen?

Well, if you are not familiar with your indie music, please do go and check out this fantastic band, dubbed “Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!”

And why are they clapping and exclaiming? The better question is who wouldn’t be, with mustaches pushing their music to the next level?

Now let’s do one of my favorite things. Interpret song titles for their deeper meanings.

“Over and Over Again” -Well people keep looking at my mustache over and over- as I would look at theirs.

“Sunshine And Clouds And Everything Proud” -How much more obvious do you have to get about singing about loving having a mustache?

“Is This Love?” -If he has a mustache it certainly is ;{)

“Gimme Some Salt” -We all know how classy a salt ‘n’ pepper nose neighbor is.

“Let The Cool Goddess Rust Away” -Well they must be a fan of Stachist’s very own mustache, rusty, formerly worn by writer Dervin.

I rest my case.
